If you’d like to volunteer over the festive period, here are some great opportunities you can get involved in:

1. MEAL MAKERS: Volunteer Cook

Could you cook one portion of dinner for an older neighbour?  Meal Makers is a local neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects people who love cooking, and who are happy to share an extra portion of home-cooked food, with an older neighbour who would really appreciate a freshly prepared meal and a friendly chat.

2. FOOD TRAIN SCOTLAND: Shopper / Delivery Driver

Food Train is an award-winning Scottish charity helping older people who struggle to do their own food shopping.  Their trusted, friendly volunteers provide a vital weekly food order shop, collection and delivery service, which helps older people stay healthy and independent at home and helps reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

3. FOOD TRAIN CONNECTS: Phone Friend

In the volunteer Phone Friend role, the Connects team will connect you with an older person who would welcome a regular blether on the phone.  You will call your friend usually weekly or fortnightly (as agreed between you) and use the time to simply have a blether, check-in on the individual’s wellbeing, allow them to share any current worries or concerns if they have any, and importantly share a laugh where possible.
