Exams are over – you did it – be proud!

From all of us here at GUSRC, well done and be proud of yourself as we all are of you!

Today many of you will have just finished your exams and deadlines. Some of you might be thinking of going on to do further studies, and for others these may be your last ever exams and you’re starting to think about what comes next.

We know that the future does not look as it should, and this is understandably pretty worrying. Things right now may seem uncertain however our message to you, now that exams are over, is this:

Be proud!

Be proud of sitting your exams and meeting your deadlines during the greatest global crisis for generations.

Be proud of being there for each other, for keeping each other going with zoom catch-ups, quizzes, Netflix parties and more.

Be proud of pulling together in your clubs and societies, putting on events and activities to keep us all engaged and entertained.

Be proud of volunteering your time to help others: going out of your way to spread kindness and doing your bit to help your local communities get through this.

Be proud of going out as key workers to protect and serve on the frontline against COVID-19.Be proud of getting through this in one piece.

Be proud of all that you achieved.

We are all worried about what comes next, but whatever it is you should always be proud that you were the year who faced huge challenges, and with creativity, teamwork and ingenuity you met them head on.

From all of us here at GUSRC, well done and be proud of yourself as we all are of you!

Please see below a round-up of some of the fab things UofG societies have been doing during lockdown:

Society Description Pics
GU Shakespeare Society “During lockdown, some of our members celebrated Shakespeare’s 456th birthday on the 23rd of April by sharing our favourite quotes from his many plays and sonnets. These included the famous ‘All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts.’ from As You Like It, and ‘She was a vixen when we went to school. And though she be but little, she is fierce.’ from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
GU Veterinary Medical Assocation “We have just started a vet virtual games where we release fun at-home challenges each week! Students from every BVMS and BSc group, staff and post-graduate students are competing to have the most creative at-home creations this week!

Our sports reps have also hosted virtual group workouts!

Since we always like to have animals in the photos, the dogs are from the Feel Good February 5K, which was before lockdown, but pups are always good motivation to get that exercise each day!”

GU Disney Society “The games we have been doing are Choose One games in different categories. We choose a category and start with 32 contestants and end up with a winner. We hope that people enjoy our games as much as we enjoy doing them!”

GlasgowMarrow Who are we?

Glasgow Marrow is a student society of the charity Anthony Nolan, the UK’s largest stem cell register. Anthony Nolan matches donors with blood cancer patients who need a stem cell transplant. We support Anthony Nolan by signing potential stem cell donors onto the stem cell register and by doing loads of fundraising!

The pandemic unfortunately meant we had to cancel various donor recruitment and fundraising events. However, our enthusiastic community of committee members, volunteers and supporters have been very busy during lockdown. Below I have described a little bit of what we’ve been up to and I have attached a variety of photos and some video clips.

Firstly we ran a ‘Miles for Marrow’ fundraiser. A group of us used our daily exercise to collectively walk or run the length of Scotland, Gretna Green to John o’Groats, and to climb the height of Everest, base camp to summit. It took us about 2 weeks and was a really nice way of staying in touch: sharing pictures, progress, and messages via a running app we all installed.

We used it to fundraise for Anthony Nolan’s Emergency Coronavirus Appeal and finished it off with a ‘virtual pub quiz’, broadcast from our Facebook page. Together Miles for Marrow and the quiz were excellent ways to stay connected, plug our fundraising and stem cell register online sign-up links, and keep grounded through the lockdown. In the end we raised a whopping £955!

Missing our campus bake sales, our committee members have been sharing their baking experiences via twice weekly Instagram stories. We’ve been posting the recipes on our social media channels and encouraging our followers to get involved. So far it been a great way to have fun and interact with our supporters, hopefully introducing some new people to our cause.

Also, this month we’re running Zoom exam revision sessions for 1st and 2nd year medical students. Our first is on Monday, where some of our members, who are in their final years of their medicine degree, will cover the key course points and give advice and tips to 1st year medical students for their upcoming exam. This is also a fundraiser (a small £2 donation per person) to again help the charity fight blood cancer.”

GULGBTQ+ “There is a video of our AGM, a photo of an Animal Crossing meet up that some of our members did and a zoom screenshot of our new committee at our first committee meeting after our AGM!”

The Cecilian Society

“The video we’ve attached is one of the performances from our virtual cabaret, themed “Half the World Away – Songs about Distance, Togetherness, and Love”. We usually hold a fundraising cabaret in April-May where members of the Cecilian Society can perform songs that are special to them. Since we couldn’t do it live this year, we asked people to send in videos of them performing in their homes. The song in the video is “Days of Summer”, performed by Rosie Shaw, Katharine Northcote, Ally Semple, and Jennifer Warren.”
